Day three of the Pac-12 Championships airs on the Pac-12 Network beginning at 1 p.m. (PT).
WALNUT, Calif. – Shelby Moran and Jorinde van Klinken won Pac-12 titles in the hammer and shot put, respectively, for the Women of Oregon on day two of the 2023 Pac-12 Championships. The UO women scored 50 points Saturday and currently sit in second place in the team standings with 55 points. In the men's competition, the Ducks enter the final day in fourth place with 35 points.
The Ducks are scheduled to have a combined 42 scoring opportunities—27 women, 15 men—Sunday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Up Next: Day three of the Pac-12 Championships will air on the Pac-12 Network beginning at 1 p.m. (PT) with the 4x100-meter relays. The Ducks' day gets started before the broadcast with Jonah Tactay in the men's triple jump.
Moran wasted no time Saturday afternoon with a school-record measure on her first attempt. She got the hammer out to 69.28m/226-3, a mark that stayed atop the standings for the remainder of the day. The Sherwood, Ore., native topped the 17-year-old UO record of 67.54m/221-7 set in 2006 by Britney Henry.
All six of Moran's throws Saturday eclipsed her season best of 66.60 meters from last week's Oregon Twilight, including three beyond the previous school record. Moran becomes the third UO woman to win a conference title in the hammer, joining Henry (2007) and Jillian Weir (2014).
For a second-consecutive year, van Klinken and Jaida Ross finished 1-2 in the Pac-12 shot put but this time around, van Klinken was wearing an Oregon kit. Now a two-time champion in the event, she got also broke the school record with her toss of 18.59m/61-0 in round two. Ross wasn't far behind with a day's best of 18.46m/60-6.75 on her first attempt of the afternoon.
The win for van Klinken was the third in program history, and first since Brittany Mann went back-to-back in 2015 and 2016. The Ducks got their final point in the event from Mine De Klerk in eighth place.
All four are back in action Sunday for the discus where van Klinken is the two-time defending champ.
The Men of Oregon got in on the scoring Saturday with nine points in the decathlon. In his debut at the Pac-12 meet, freshman Rafael Raap scored 7,695 points to finish as the conference runner-up. He was aided on day two by a season best in the discus and a lifetime best of 59.61m/195-7 in the javelin. Raap led after nine events but was overtaken by Washington's Oliver Thorner in the 1500 meters.
Coupled with Pac-12 results and national marks entering the day, Raap's score puts him 15th in the NCAA this season.
Senior Nathan Poff used a season-best time of 4:36.05 in the 1500 meters to go from ninth to eighth in the final decathlon standings. He finishes his UO career as a three-time conference scorer in the event.
The collection of points from the Oregon multis continued with the heptathlon, led by Taylor Chocek in fourth place. The Eugene native posted a lifetime-best score of 5,793 points, eclipsing her previous best of 5,625 from the Mt. SAC Relays a month ago. She had a lifetime best in the javelin of 46.29m/151-10 and followed up with a season's best in the 800 meters to secure five points toward the team total.
The Ducks added seventh- and eighth-place finishes from Gianna Bullock and Colleen Uzoekwe, both in their Pac-12 debuts. Bullock scored a lifetime best of 5,162 points while Uzoekwe finished the two days with 5,108 points.
Alex Slenning and Giuliano Scasso combined for 10 points in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the only track final of the day. In a bronze finish, Slenning knocked nearly 10 seconds off his season's best and crossed the finish line in 8:44.69, his fastest steeple outing since 2019. Scasso (9:01.02) picked up four points for the men in his conference debut.
On the women's side of the steeplechase, Harper McClain lowered her lifetime best to 10:12.35 and secured sixth-place points. She finished a spot ahead of teammate Malia Pivec (10:14.75) in seventh, and the duo added five points to Oregon's total in the team race.
Sitting in seventh place after three attempts Saturday, Alysah Hickey responded with a 6.45m/21-2 measure in the fourth round to move into second where she would ultimately finish. She had a fifth-round jump of 6.39 meters that would have also been good for runner-up status.
In the first prelim of day two, freshman Anthony Trucks qualified for the final of the 110-meter hurdles. He finished third in his heat and seventh overall in 14.17, a new lifetime best. Since his outdoor opener at the Aztec Invitational, Trucks has lowered his personal best in three-consecutive races.
Fellow freshman Aaliyah McCormick secured an automatic qualifier in the 100-meter hurdles. She won heat one in a wind-legal time of 12.85 to guarantee her spot in Sunday's final and post the first sub-13 outing of her career. McCormick remains third on the program's all-time list but joins Alaysha Johnson and Sasha Wallace as the only UO women to dip below 13 seconds with a legal wind.
The UO women will also have two finalists in the 400 meters. Ella Clayton clocked a season-best 52.55 for the fifth-fastest qualifier from the prelims. She'll be joined by teammate Katriina Wright (52.97) in the Pac-12 final Sunday afternoon.
Both teams with all two entries in the 100-meter finals with defending champion Micah Williams and freshman PJ Ize-Iyamu Jr. representing the men, and Jadyn Mays and Lily Jones in the women's race. Williams was the second-fastest qualifier in the men's prelims while Ize-Iyamu had a time of 10.25 to lower his lifetime best.
Mays stopped the clock in 11.27 to win her heat Saturday and Jones (11.47) advanced on time in her Pac-12 debut. Mays is now set for three races Sunday with the 4x100-meter relay and two individual finals in the 100 and 200 meters.
Matthew Erickson, third at last year's Pac-12 Championships, will make another run at the 800-meter conference gold. He used a kick over the final 100 meters in Saturday's prelims to take the top spot in his heat (1:51.76) and advance automatically.
The UO women got season-best efforts from Klaudia Kazimierska (2:05.13) and Ella Nelson (2:06.12) to add two more chances to score Sunday, this time at 800 meters. Both were second in their respective heats to guarantee their spots in the final. Kazimierska is also one of three UO finalists in the women's 1500 meters.
