Ducks Drop Back-and-Forth Match
08/31/23 | Women's Soccer
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Oregon's freshman class impressed and the Ducks showed some grit by rallying to tie the game twice, but ultimately dropped a 3-2 decision to Northern Arizona Thursday night at Lumberjack Stadium.
The Ducks (0-3-1) tied the match at 1-1 and later at 2-2 before the Lumberjacks (2-2-1) scored the game-winner in the 77th minute.
Oregon's talented freshmen class accounted for both assists and one goal on Thursday.
How It Happened: Northern Arizona opened the scoring on a counterattack in the fifth minute. NAU goalkeeper Trinity Corcoran drove a long kick toward Oregon's back line and Kayla Shebar ran the ball down behind Oregon's defense and found the goal for a 1-0 Lumberjack lead.
Oregon answered six minutes later. Freshman Kristen Conti served a long ball into the NAU box. Callan Harrington got onto it on the second bounce and flicked a shot backward over her left shoulder that cleared Corcoran and landed in the right side of NAU's net.
The Lumberjacks used a free kick to retake the lead late in the half. After the Ducks had trouble clearing the ball, Erin O'Connor took advantage to score a goal from the top of the box in the 38th minute.
NAU led 2-1 at halftime.
Two freshmen led Oregon's second rally in the 75th minute. After just missing a goal five minute earlier, Ryann Reynolds headed home a perfect cross from Lauren Kenny to tie the game at 2-2.
Two minutes later, Avery Ott scored the game-winner for the Lumberjacks.
Notable: Harrington's third career goal in just her sixth career game … Reynolds got on the board with her first career goal, while both Conti and Kenny recorded the first assist of their careers … Oregon and NAU have played twice all-time and there has been a rare goalkeeper assist in both games. Maddy Goldberg earned the goalie helper when the teams first met in 2021, while the Lumberjack's Corcoran had an assist in Thursday's game … There have been 11 goals in the two games between Oregon and NAU … The match against Big Sky Conference preseason favorite Northern Arizona was Oregon's third straight contest against a team picked to win its respective league. Last week, the Ducks faced the preseason favorites of the SEC (Arkansas) and the Missouri Valley (Missouri State) … This was the Ducks' first game in Flagstaff … This was the third of a four-game road trip for Oregon.
Up Next: Oregon's four-game road trip concludes Sunday at Grand Canyon (1 p.m., ESPN+).
