Ross Takes Over NCAA Lead
01/28/24 | Track and Field
The Ducks produced four top-three finishes and six top-10 UO performances Saturday.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oregon track and field team tallied four top-three finishes Saturday, including a win by Jaida Ross in the shot put, and added six top-10 program marks on the final day of competition at the Razorback Invitational.
Ross produced an NCAA-leading and world No. 2 measure of 18.84m/61-9.75 on her final attempt of the afternoon. During her standout series, she posted three marks beyond her previous lifetime best and, in the process, became the No. 8 performer on the all-time collegiate indoor list. The Medford, Ore., native also broke the Razorback Invitational meet record, betting the old standard of 18.47m/60-7.25 by Raven Saunders from 2017.
The Ducks' first top-10 program performance of the day came from sophomore Anthony Trucks. In the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles, he crossed the finish line in 7.81 to move into seventh on the UO list. Trucks went on to finish sixth (7.93) in the final, another time that surpassed his previous best coming into the day.
Klaudia Kazimierska, off her lead leg on Friday's school-record DMR, ran 2:03.46 to finish third among collegians—and fifth overall—in the 800 meters. Already second in UO history in the mile, she is now the No. 4 performer in the 800 meters. Kazimierska led a quartet of Oregon women inside the top 15 with Ella Nelson (2:04.93), Silan Ayyildiz (2:05.92) and Mia Barnett (2:06.37).
Nelson ran the 800-meter leg on that distance-medley relay Friday.
Ayyildiz, Barnett and Dalia Frias were the top-three collegians in the invitational mile run earlier in the day. Ayyildiz, in her Oregon debut, clocked in at 4:34.79 to finish second overall and lead all collegians. She was followed by Barnett (4:37.00) and Frias (4:37.54) in fourth and fifth, respectively.
In another mid-distance showcase for the Ducks, three UO men posted sub-1:50 performances led by Matthew Erickson in 1:47.92, a new indoor best. That time also moved him into the Oregon top-10 list, good for seventh all-time. Erickson was joined Saturday by Tomas Palfrey in 1:48.79 and James Harding in 1:48.97, a new national indoor record of his native New Zealand.
Newcomer Ryann Porter made a quick impression on the UO all-time list in the triple jump. Two weeks ago at the UW Preview, she cracked the top 10—tied for ninth—in her Oregon debut. Porter jumped to a tie for fourth on that list with Saturday's 13.00m/42-8 performance, a new indoor best. She produced the measure on her final pass down the runway.
To close out the meet, the Ducks' 4x400 relay team of Shana Grebo, Ella Clayton, Katriina Wright and Shaniya Hall combined for a time of 3:32.44 in section four of six, and finished seventh among college quartets. The time improves their standing as the No. 8 relay in program history. The four Ducks had a previous best together of 3:32.64 at the 2022 Pac-12 Invitational.
In a pair of top-five finishes and season-best efforts, Aaliyah McCormick (8.14) ran to third place in the 60-meter hurdles and Jadyn Mays (7.22) was fifth in the 60 meters. Places two through six were within .03 of one another in a tight finish.
Up Next: The Ducks will compete at the Don Kirby Invitational (Feb. 9-10) in Albuquerque, N.M. and the Eagle Elite Invitational in Boston. The meet in Boston will be contested at the TRACK at new balance, site of this year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
