EUGENE, Ore. – The results may not be evident in the win column, but Oregon has been one of the toughest outs in the Big Ten Conference this season.
The Ducks' mettle was on display again on Thursday night at Papé Field when No. 15 Wisconsin needed a goal in the 53rd minute to escape with a 1-0 win.
It was the seventh time in Oregon's last eight matches that a game was decided by one goal or ended in a tie.
"I think we continue to show up against really, really quality teams," said coach Tracy Joyner. "It just goes to show our mentality. That we want to be in every game, we're going to work for the results and we're not going to give up.
"We're going to keep pushing and fighting and we created some really, really good chances there at the end, for sure," she said. "I think that that shows a lot of growth … and knowing that what we do well is defending and being patient and then trying to generate those chances towards the end of the game. Unfortunately, we didn't capitalize, but I thought it was a really good performance."
How It Happened: Though the Badgers put up 10 shots in the first half, the Ducks were able to prevent any dangerous attacks from Wisconsin. (12-3-1, 6-2-1). Caeley Goldstein made four saves in the first 45 minutes, all of which were routine.
"Defensively, we were very good," said Goldstein, who finished with five saves on the night. "We shut down a lot of opportunities, especially for a ranked team, so I'm proud of our defensive shape and organization."
The Ducks (2-10-4, 0-5-3) attempted three shots in the first half, one apiece from Addisen Boyer, Savannah Holley and Ella Osmussen.
The match was scoreless until the 53rd minute when Wisconsin's Brooke Allen gathered in a long, 50-yard pass from the backline and scored from distance.
Despite the goal, Oregon outshot the Badgers 6-4 in the second half.
The Ducks had two chances to tie the game in the final minutes.
Jayde Holley connected with Boyer on a cross into the box in the 86th minute, but Boyer's point-blank shot attempt was saved by Wisconsin goalkeeper Drew Stover.
In the final minute of the match, Jayde Holley crossed in a ball to Taylor Bryan, but her header from six yards out went over the crossbar.
Notable: The Ducks committed a season-low two fouls … Lauren Kenny led Oregon with three shots, while Boyer attempted two … This was the first match between Oregon and Wisconsin since 2014 … The Ducks have allowed two goals or less in 14-of-16 games this season.
Quotable:
Head Coach Tracy Joyner on goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein
"Caeley is very consistent, and that's something I've known for four years now with her. We can always count on her in that way. The back line communication looked really good tonight."
Goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein
"I think the future is so bright for this program. We've had a lot of unfortunate hits with a lot of injuries and just unlucky things, but we're building a really good foundation, and I think that the following seasons will all be really good."
Up Next: The Ducks host Minnesota on Sunday (Noon, B1G+). Oregon will celebrate its seniors in a pregame ceremony scheduled to begin at 11:40 a.m.
