Ducks Fall at No. 22 Ohio State, 1-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Oregon went toe-to-toe with one the best defensive teams in the country but No. 22 Ohio State scored on a counterattack in the 52nd minute and the Ducks dropped a 1-0 decision Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Buckeyes (6-1-6, 2-0-5) came into the night with the third-best defense nationally, allowing just 0.33 goals per game. Undaunted, Oregon (2-9-3, 0-5-2) attempted 11 shots, seven in the first half, with five going on frame.
"We played hard tonight and generated some great chances against a very good defense," said coach Tracy Joyner.

How It Happened: Neither team was able to break through with a goal in a back-and-forth first half.
Addisen Boyer took a shot on goal for the Ducks 90 seconds into the match, while Savannah Holley came off the bench in the 20th minute and fired a shot withing seconds of entering the field. Holley attempted three of the Ducks' seven first half shots.
On the other end of the field, Caeley Goldstein kept the Buckeyes off the scoreboard by making five saves in the first 45 minutes. The sixth-year goalkeeper matched her season-high with seven saves for the match.
Ohio State scored the lone goal of the game on a counterattack in the 52nd minute. Oregon had the ball in the Buckeyes' defensive end and brought numbers forward. But the ball got away from the Ducks and a half-field clearance went to Riley Lijewski on the left side and she lobbed the ball over Goldstein and into the net from long range.
An aggressive play from Abella Hunter nearly drew the Ducks even in the 78th minute. An Ohio State defender passed the ball slowly back to goalkeeper Molly Pritchard. Hunter recognized the poorly paced pass and got to the ball just before Pritchard. The two players met in a violent collision.
The ball deflected out to Carys Hall, who took a high shot from the top of the box, but Pritchard had just enough time to recover, jump up and punch the ball over the crossbar.
Notable: Goldstein made her 300th career save in the 17th minute Thursday night. She had to respond quickly to make the save after a ball deflected off an Oregon defender to OSU's Lijewski who sent a hard shot at the net, but Goldstein stepped up to catch the ball with her body … Holley attempted a career-high four shots, while Hunter had three … Oregon has allowed five fewer goals (17) through 14 games than at the same point in 2024 … Defender Jasmine Young has played in all 1,260 minutes this season … This was the first meeting between Oregon and Ohio State.
Up Next: The Ducks play at Penn State on Sunday (10 a.m., B1G+).
