Ducks Score Six Times in Big Rivalry Series Win

EUGENE, Ore. – Ellie Felt and Logan Russo both scored two goals to lead Oregon to a dominant 6-0 Rivalry Series win over Oregon State in front of a sold-out crowd of 1,000 Thursday at Papé Field.

The Ducks' six goals were the most scored in the history of the series. Oregon's margin of victory was also the largest of the 30 meetings between the two in-state rivals.

Felt got Oregon on the board on a penalty kick in the 27^th minute. Russo followed with her first two collegiate goals less than five minutes apart to stake the Ducks to a 3-0 halftime lead.

"We really wanted to start the game well," said coach Tracy Joyner. "It's been taking us 10 to 20 minutes to get into games, so we started off doing really well and we thought that was something really important to change the trajectory and set the tone for a rivalry match."

The Ducks added three more goals after halftime from Cloe Chase, Felt and Savannah Holley who, like Russo, found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career.

Improving to 4-0-1, Oregon continued its best start in a decade. A major force behind that success is the Ducks' offense, which is scoring at an historic pace. The team's 16 goals though five games are the program's most in 45 years.

"We've been able to generate on a lot of opportunities and today we capitalized on them," said Joyner.

Goalkeepers Gray Willson and Gia Kiesling combined on Oregon's fourth shutout in five games. The Ducks have yet to allow a goal in the run of play this season.

How It Happened: Oregon broke a scoreless tie on a penalty kick in the 27^th minute. Abella Hunter ran into the 18-yard-box chasing down a cross from the left side and she was pulled down by an OSU defender but still managed to get off a shot that hit the near post. Upon video review, the Ducks were awarded a penalty kick on the foul and Felt converted her second penalty try of the season.

"I think the team did great in general, not just me, but we had a lot of people score out there," said Felt. "So I think gave us a lot of confidence for the rest of the team as well, that other people are scoring and that it's consistent across the board."

Russo scored in the 36^th and 41^st minutes. On her first goal, Lauren Hunter slid to beat an OSU defender to the ball and flicked it on to Russo who went over the top of the goalkeeper for the goal. Less than five minutes later, Russo picked off a ball that an OSU defender was trying to clear and scored from several yards beyond the box.

Cloe Chase, who scored her first goal as a Duck Sunday at San Francisco, got her first goal in front of the home crowd in the second half. In the 59^th minute, Miya Alamares crossed the ball in from the left corner and Chase headed the ball to the far post from five yards out.

Elise Picard set up Felt's second goal in the 66^th minute. She drove a high free kick toward OSU's goal and Felt met the ball midair and headed it past the goalkeeper to the near post.

Holley fought through a couple of OSU defenders in the 69^th minute to corral Kate Cheldin's long entry pass from beyond midfield. Holley then took a touch before beating the keeper to the lower right corner of the net from eight yards away.

Both Russo and Holley came off the bench to score, while Hunter and Picard both registered an assist off the bench.

"Our players that came off the bench immediately impacted the game and that's something that we've talked about quite a bit too," said Joyner. "Just to have our subs come in and change the game in a positive way and they did a fantastic job."

Notable: The six goals were the most scored by Oregon since a 6-1 win against Butler Sept. 19, 2010 … Oregon last started a season at 4-0-1 in 2016 … This is only the second time in program history Oregon has recorded at least four shutouts in its first five games; the 2014 team opened the season with five consecutive shutouts … Only the 1981 Oregon team scored more goals (25) in its first five games than the current squad's 16 … Felt matched her career high with five shots, four of which were on goal, and now leads the team with four goals on the season … Alamares, Cheldelin and Picard all recorded their first career assist.
