Five Top-10 Program Marks in Weekend Opener
02/14/25 | Track and Field
Busy weekend continues Saturday with meets across four states.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon distance crew posted five top-10 program times on the first day of a busy weekend across the country. Friday's schedule featured competition at the BC Eagle Elite and BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
In the first result of the Ducks' busy weekend, Tomas Palfrey and Rheinhardt Harrison clocked a pair of mile lifetime bests and top-10 program marks at the BU Valentine Invitational. Palfrey lowered his best to 3:54.21, just two weeks removed from his 3:54.57 in Arkansas, while Rheinhardt ran 3:54.74 for the first sub-4:00 effort of his collegiate career.
The two Ducks move to No. 6 and 8, respectively, on the Oregon all-time list. With his outing, Harrison becomes the 36th man in program history to clock a sub-4:00 indoor mile, and the seventh to do so this season.
The Men of Oregon added a third top-10 program time at the BU meet, this time by newcomer Abdel Laadjel in the 5,000 meters. The Lucan, Ireland, native posted a time of 13:34.35, good for sixth on the Ducks' all-time list. Laadjel was seventh among collegians in the field and finished 19th overall.
Across town at the BC Eagle Elite, Wilma Nielsen continued her standout season with an indoor best of 2:01.50 over 800 meters. She finished fourth overall, and second among collegians in the field. Nielsen, having set the school record in the mile earlier this season, is now the third-fastest indoor performer at 800 meters trailing Raevyn Rogers (2:00.90) and Laura Roesler (2:01.32).
Based on times entering the weekend and Friday's race results, Nielsen moves to seventh in the NCAA this season.
The distance crew's success traveled south to Fayetteville, Ark., where Connor Burns added his name to Oregon's all-time list for 3,000 meters. Burns knocked nearly 20 seconds off his indoor best in the event, stopping the clock in 7:48.47 to win section two of three and finish sixth among collegians in the overall field. His effort puts him at No. 10 in school history.
Burns led a group of five Ducks inside the top 20 of Friday's race at the Tyson Invitational, all with new lifetime bests. He was followed by Evan Bishop (7:50.53) in 10th place, Benjamin Balazs (7:52.71) in 12th, and Aiden Smith (7:55.21) and Jeffery Rogers (7:55.22) in the 16th and 17th spots, respectively.
At the Don Kirby Invitational in New Mexico, Jadyn Mays lowered her season best to 22.57 and finished second overall in the invitational section of the 200 meters. That time will convert to 22.64 (altitude) for NCAA qualifying purposes and currently stands as the No. 3 showing in the country this season. Amirah Shaheed (23.68), out of the unseeded section, and Moriah Oliveira (23.92) also turned in sub-24 times.
Fuad Omer dropped time in the 400 meters for a second-consecutive meet and now carries a personal best of 47.65 in the event. He entered the year with an indoor best of 48.84 from high school before he ran 47.93 at the Razorback Invitational (Feb. 1).
