Soccer Drops Second Straight 1-0 Contest

RIVERSIDE, Calif., ? Despite attempting 21 shots, the Oregon soccer team dropped its second match of the 2006 season, losing 1-0 to UC Riverside Friday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. It was the second straight 1-0 loss for the Ducks (0-2-0), who fell to Long Beach State by that score in the Aug. 25 season opener.
"We did not play our finest game," said head coach Tara Erickson. "We're playing much tougher non-conference teams than last season, but the bottom line is that you have to score goals."
The Highlanders' Tessa Lennala scored the game's lone goal in the 10th minute. Jill Del Rosario and Jenna Leonti assisted on the score.
"I thought we did not adjust well to the conditions in the beginning of the game and that's when Riverside scored their goal," said Erickson. "The ball bounced four or five times before (Lennala) shot it and we had chances to clear, but couldn't get it done."
Freshman Leigh Quinlan attempted five shots to lead Oregon. Senior Nicole Garbin and freshman Melissa Buich added four shots each for the Ducks.
"We finally started playing in the second half and really were in control of the game," said Erickson, whose team outshot the Highlanders 16-6 in the second period. "We had a ton of chances and couldn't take advantage. Their goalkeeper had a couple of nice stops, so I've got to give her credit for helping her team hang on."
Tawny Poggio made 12 saves for UC Riverside (2-1-0), including nine in the second half. The 12 saves was the third-highest single-game total in school history. Jessie Chatfield had nine saves for the Ducks.
Oregon played without starting defender Nicole Dobrzynski, who had to sit out the UC Riverside match as a result of a red card she received in the Long Beach State game.
"It really hurt us not to have (Dobrzynski) today, but we can't use that as an excuse," said Erickson. "We have to learn to be aggressive from the start and take that lesson into Sunday's game."
The Ducks continue their California road trip with a 1 p.m. match at Loyola Marymount on Sunday.
GAME NOTES: Erickson noted that Oregon's outside midfielders played particularly well, especially considering the small field and temperatures in the mid-90s. "Our outside midfielders -- both the starters and those who came off the bench -- really played well and gave us fresh legs on the outside, which was a tough assignment under these conditions. They had to run a lot and they kept giving us offensive opportunities, especially in the second half." Senior Rachel Grushkin and sophomore Taylor Callan -- both midfielders -- saw their first action of the 2006 season...freshmen Megan Watson and Barbara Blocker made their varsity debuts for the Ducks...Watson, from Lake Oswego, Ore., missed the season opener with a sore groin...freshmen midfielder Rianna Mansfield (Eugene, Ore.) had to come out of the game early in the first half due to a hip flexor and did not return...dating back to last season, Oregon has been shutout five times in a row, tying the school record set three times previously (1996, 2000, 2003)...the Ducks haven't scored since a 1-0 win at Washington Oct. 28, 2005, a span of 506:10...that's still just the fourth-longest scoreless streak in school history, but only 20:56 from breaking the school record of 527:05 set during the 1996 season...Oregon is 0-2 to start a season for the first time since the 2002 squad got off to an 0-3 beginning.
