Late Goal Lifts Jayhawks to Win Over Ducks
09/12/10 | Women's Soccer
Kansas forward Emily Cressy scored the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to lead the Jayhawks to a 1-0 victory over the University of Oregon soccer team Sunday morning at the UNLV Nike Classic in Las Vegas. The Ducks fell to 2-3-2 overall with the loss, KU improved to 3-4 on the year.
Oregon nearly doubled the Jayhawks' shot total, holding a staggering 25-13 edge in overall shots and an 11-5 advantage in shots on target. The Ducks also dominated the corner kick opportunities, 5-1.
“Unfortunately it was the same story,” head coach Tara Erickson said about out-playing the opponent but losing. “We took some good shots and created some good chances, including off the frame, off the cross bar, off the goalkeeper.”
Senior forward Jen Stoltenberg and sophomore midfielder Scout Libke combined to take over half the Ducks' shots with 14. Stoltenberg had four shots on goal, nine total, while four of Libke's five shots were on goal.
KU goalkeeper Kat Liebetrau had 11 saves in playing the full 90 minutes. She faced 17 Oregon shots in the second half of play, with eight of her saves coming over the final 45.
“We need individuals to finish their chances, and defensively we cannot have lapses,” Erickson added. “We're looking for players to continue to be goal-hungry and working in combination with each other to score some goals.”
Four Jayhawks recorded shots in the match, with Cressy registering a team-high six shots - three on goal. Forward Whitney Berry had three shots with one on goal.
Oregon was whistled four times for fouls, while KU had just two. UO junior goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee had four saves in playing the entire match.
“I thought the back line did well, I thought Lindsay Parlee did well in goal. They kept us solid,” Erickson said.
Seven Ducks total went the full 90 minutes – Parlee, Libke, seniors Bree Rowe and Kirstie Kuhns, junior Taylor Jones and sophomores Lauren Thompson and Nicole Bakke.
Oregon (2-3-2) will play a pair of neutral-site matches next week at the Oregon State Tournament in Corvallis. The Ducks will take on San Diego State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Butler on Sunday at 11 a.m.
