EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's soccer team collected their first Pac-12 win on Thursday night at Papé Field against Arizona, 1-0.
The Ducks' record moves to 7-8-1 on the season and 1-6 in Pac-12 play. Arizona is 6-8-1 overall and 1-6 in the Pac-12.
With the seventh win of the season, Oregon surpassed last year's victory total.
How it Happened: In the 31st minute, senior Maryn Beutler found a pass deflected off an Arizona player to fire a point blank shot into the back of the net. The game-winner was her second goal of the season.
At half, the Wildcats led in shots at seven, while the Ducks had three. Oregon led in corner kick opportunities at four (Arizona, three) and had two saves.
Throughout the entirety of the match, Oregon had ten shots (three on goal) to Arizona's 15 shots (eight on goal). Oregon had seven corner kicks, while the Wildcats had ten.
Sophomore Sofia Chambers contributed two shots for the Ducks. Seniors Beutler and Ashlee Schulz, juniors Caitlyn Wong, Abby Morrow, Miranda Schulz, sophomores Kyra Fawcett and Marissa Everett and freshman Jessica Yu all contributed one.
After running out to make a clutch save for the Ducks, a collision with Arizona's top goal scorer, took junior goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir out of the game and freshman Katelyn Carter came in.
The win goes to Hinriksdottir's record. She is now 3-6 on the season.
What it Means: The Ducks are now 7-8-1 overall and 1-6 in Pac-12 play.
With the win, Oregon surpassed last year's victory total. The Ducks last had seven wins during the 2014-15 season, with an overall record of 7-10-2 and 3-7-1 in the conference.
Quotes: Head coach Kat Mertz -
On tonight's result...
"It's awesome. I thought our girls fought really hard today. Arizona is really good at what they do, but I thought we stayed really disciplined on their flip throws and set pieces, so I'm proud of what we were able to accomplish."
On their postseason chances going forward…
"At this point we have to take it one game at a time. The Pac-12 is so strong from top to bottom. Going into the conference season our RPI was really strong, but we need to take it one game at a time and if we can shoot for being .500, I think we could have a chance."
Looking Ahead: The Ducks will host the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sunday. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
