Ducks Scorch Sun Devils
10/23/16 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's soccer team scored the most goals in a Pac-12 game in six years Sunday to defeat Arizona State 4-0 at Papé Field.
The last time the Ducks scored four goals against a Pac-12 opponent was against Arizona in 2010, 4-0.
The four goals account for most in a game since 2012, when Oregon beat Gonzaga 4-2.
The Ducks are now at 24 goals on the season, the most since 2010 (29).
With the win, the Ducks' record moves to 8-8-1 on the season and 2-6 in Pac-12 play. Arizona State is 6-8-1 overall and 1-6 in the Pac-12.
How it Happened: Senior Maryn Beutler scored in the fifth minute off an assist from sophomore Marissa Everett. This is Beutler's back-to-back game-winning goals. On Thursday, the Bend, Ore. native solidified the Ducks' 1-0 win over Arizona.
In the 47th minute, sophomore Bayley Bruner picked up massive speed down the field to go one-on-one with ASU's keeper. With a touch that went left of Emma Malsy, Bruner lifted the Ducks 2-0. The goal was Bruner's second of the year.
Just two minutes later, Everett fired a shot that was deflected by Malsy, recovered by junior Abby Morrow, who then fired and found the back of the net. Morrow's goal is her fourth of the year. The assist was Everett's second of the day and fourth this season.
The fourth goal of the night came after junior Sofia Chambers converted a penalty kick that Everett drew in the box after a collision with the keeper. The goal was her first of the season.
Throughout the match, both the Sun Devils and Ducks had twelve shots - four and six on frame, respectively. ASU had six corner kick opportunities, while the Ducks had two.
Sophomore Kyra Fawcett had the most shots on the day for the Ducks with three, while Morrow, Beutler, Everett and Chambers added two and Bruner added one.
In goal, freshman Katelyn Carter split time with senior goalkeeper Lauren Holden. They both picked up two key saves. Carter's record moves to 5-2-1.
What it Means: The Ducks are now 8-8-1 overall and 2-6 in Pac-12 play.
Today's goal tally of four was the most in a Pac-12 match since the Ducks bested Arizona 4-0 in the 2010 season.
The four goals also account for most in a game since 2012, when Oregon beat Gonzaga 4-2.
Now at 24 goals this season, the Ducks have tallied their most since the 2010 season (29).
Quotes: Head coach Kat Mertz -
On winning two straight…
"I know this team has the ability to do something special and we showed that in the first part of the non-conference schedule, so it's nice to be able to do that in Pac-12 play."
On their depth as a team…
"It's great. We talked about that as one of our strong points in the spring. We're trying to just move the ball. We've had midfielders scoring, which you need to have in order to be a successful team to take some pressure off the players up top."
On starting fast for the second straight game…
"We started off that way in Hawai'i. We've had a couple games where we scored in the first five minutes. If we can continue to start that way and understand that you can't take your foot off the pedal, we'll continue to be successful."
Bayley Bruner, Sophomore, Midfielder
On their play as a team of late…
"We've been hot lately. We're playing like a team with a lot of confidence and I'm excited to see what Washington has for us."
Looking Ahead: The Ducks will make the final road trip of the Pac-12 season, when they face Washington on Oct. 27 and Washington State on Oct. 30. The final home game at Papé Field? will be on Nov. 4, as the Ducks host Oregon State for a Civil War match-up.
