End-to-End Match Goes Washington's Way

Ducks fall 1-0 on a goal in the 48th minute
EUGENE, ORE. - Pacific Northwest rivals Washington and Oregon played an end-to-end match Sunday at Papé Field that ended in a 1-0 loss for the Ducks (6-7-0, 0-5-0). Oregon will have a chance to increase their winning percentage to .500 on Friday against Arizona State at 4 p.m. at Papé Field (Pac-12 Networks).
How It Happened: A Sunday clash of two teams that were anxious to get back onto the pitch after both teams experienced disappointing results Thursday, both the Ducks and the Huskies began the game with aggression and hustle. Oregon's Emma Eddy and Marissa Everett wasted no time testing Washington goalkeeper, Sarah Shimer.
As for Washington (9-3-2, 2-1-2), junior forward Pascale Dumesnil received quality service from her midfield, granting her many chances to test captain goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir. Sianna Siemonsma and Ava Lewis also had opportunities to score but could not capitalize.
The second half differed slightly as Washington's leading goal scorer and assist leader Kimberly Keever, increased her goal tally when she found the back of the net in the 48th minute.
After the Huskies won possession in the middle of the park, the ball was played over the top as senior Shannon Simon received it along the right flank. Simon dribbled past two Oregon defenders, playing a low cross for Keever who slid to make contact and tapped the ball with her right foot. The finessed shot would reach the bottom left corner for a goal.
Who Stood Out: Eddy started for the Ducks as a striker against the Huskies. The Eugene native from Sheldon High School pressed Washington's back line all game, and even had a shot on goal in the first half that was saved by Sarah Shimer.
Eddy admitted that Oregon's performance was good but could have been better. The Ducks were out shot by the Huskies 13 to five.
"We had some good chances but maybe in the final third we could have been a bit better, getting more players into the box, making runs to get more chances," Eddy said.
"A lot of it is just mentality," she said. "We have to believe in ourselves, keep fighting and keep looking forward."
Oregon's fullbacks, Jazmin Jackmon and Mia Costa have been strengths for the Ducks on defense but also going forward offensively. The combination of height, strength and athleticism limited Washington's aerial attack and the Huskies' corner kicks were not a threat.
Jackmon, a transfer from Santa Clara University, has seen time both at center back and fullback. The fullback position has been new for Jackmon but she has done well this season on the flank.
"Getting up and down the field is definitely tough," Jackmon said. "It's a different position than I was in last season but I'm learning how to grow in that position to help my teammates."
Jackmon admitted that it was something to get used to but her teammates made it easy on her to fit in the role and help her team push forward.
The Pasadena, Calif., native is usually placed on the left with Mia Costa on the right but head coach Kat Mertz decided to invert the two players to gain a tactical advantage when playing the Huskies.
"We saw something specific against UW that we wanted invert our outside backs," Mertz said. "We also put Emma Eddy in the ten role and Chardonnay Curran into the nine role. Right now, we're just looking for players who will work hard on the ball but also off the ball."
Notable: The energy through the Oregon Soccer complex was electric through 90 minutes as the team recognized Breast Cancer Awareness month, wearing pink jerseys for Sunday's match. In addition, fans dressed in pink to show support.
"Breast cancer awareness is something all women and men need to be aware of," Mertz said. "One in eight women are affected by breast cancer. I hope everyone understands what it means to wear pink and do a little more research behind it."
Fans were given the opportunity to participate in a silent auction to raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and a total of $1,860 was donated from a season-high 625 fans in attendance.
Quotable: "I think everyone hits the Pac-12 and you're all fighting your own adversity," Mertz said. "Every team has their own adversity and it's how you respond that will determine the rest of your season."
Up Next: Oregon will have a few days to get back to the training ground to prepare for Pac-12 foe Arizona State. The Ducks and Sun Devils will face off Friday at Papé Field at 4 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
