Ducks Head to Pac-12 Championships Seeking 10th Straight Sweep
05/09/18 | Track and Field
The Ducks will look to continue their dominance of the Pac-12 Conference this weekend as they go for their 10th consecutive sweep of the Pac-12 Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon track and field teams will look to continue their dominance of the Pac-12 Conference this weekend as the Ducks head to Stanford, Calif., for the 2018 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Oregon has owned the Conference of Champions over the last decade, having swept the conference team titles in each of the past nine seasons. The Men of Oregon's reign extends past that, as they have won 11 consecutive conference titles. Oregon has won every men's and women's conference championship since the Pac-10 became the Pac-12 in 2012.
"We expect to go there and put our best foot forward and compete really well," said head coach Robert Johnson. "We talk a lot here about, 'Be Oregon,' and part of 'Being Oregon' is going to Pac-12s and doing really well."
Both days of the Pac-12 Championships will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Network, beginning at 5:30 p.m. PT on Saturday and 3 p.m. PT on Sunday. Live results for the meet can be found at pac-12.com or on the track and field schedule on goducks.com, and updates throughout the meets will be provided on Twitter via @OregonTF and @Run4Ducks.
O'CONNOR, TORRES OPEN SCORING AT PAC-12 MULTIS
Both the Men and Women of Oregon will begin this weekend with three points on the board after a pair of sixth-place finishes from Kylee O'Connor and Austin Torres last weeekend at the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships. O'Connor scored a career-high 5,271 points in the heptathlon to score three points and move to No. 10 on the UO all-time performance list. Torres was sixth in the decathlon, the first of his career, with 5,797 points to score three points for the UO men.
DUCKS IN THE FRONT OF THE PAC
Entering the Pac-12 Championships, the Ducks lead the conference in 11 different events and are all over the Pac-12 top-five lists. In the sprints, Cravon Gillespie and Damarcus Simpson rank 1-2 in the men's 100 meters, and freshman Lauren Rain Williams is tops in the women's 200. The Ducks also boast the top performers in both the short hurdles in Braxton Canady and Alaysha Johnson. Sam Prakel and Jessica Hull are both No. 1 in the men's and women's 1,500 meters, respectively, and Samantha Nadel leads the 10,000 meters, though she will run the 5,000 this weekend. Simpson and Tristan James rank 1-2 in the men's long jump, and Chaquinn Cook enters as the favorite in the women's triple jump. John Nizich is the top men's javelin thrower entering this weekend, and the Ducks are in the top three in the Pac-12 in all four relays.
FOUR DUCKS LOOKING TO REPEAT AS PAC-12 CHAMPS
The Ducks claimed 14 individual Pac-12 titles last season in Eugene on their way to their ninth straight sweep of the team titles, and four Ducks will be back at the conference meet this weekend looking to defend their titles. Chaquinn Cook and Rhesa Foster will look to sweep the horizontal jumps for the second year in a row, and Damarcus Simpson will go for his second straight Pac-12 long jump championship. Alaysha Johnson will also be back to defend her title in the 100-meter hurdles, and both 4x100 relay teams will return at least one athlete from last year's winning teams.

'THE FINEST TRACK AND FIELD FACILITY IN THE WORLD' SET TO OPEN IN 2020

Slated to open in 2020, Hayward Field will set a new standard for sports venues, create world-class training and competition facilities for student-athletes, and incorporate new laboratories and research facilities to better understand the potential of human performance.
