Soaring Ducks Shut Out Vandals, 2-0

The Oregon soccer team followed up Friday's historic win at Portland by beating Idaho at home Sunday, 2-0, to finish 6-1-1 in nonconference play.
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon soccer team will enter Pac-12 play riding a four-game win streak, the longest for the Ducks entering conference play since 2005, after Sunday's 2-0 victory over Idaho before 605 fans at Papé Field.
The UO women (6-1-1) followed up Friday's historic win at Portland by holding the Vandals to one shot Sunday. Marissa Everett scored both Oregon goals in the first half, and the Ducks unleashed a barrage of chances in the final 10 minutes but were unable to add on.
"We talked about enjoying the win on Friday night, but the next morning saying, OK, that's it, we are done," UO coach Kat Mertz said. "We accomplished that goal. Kind of like we've been saying all year — climbing the next mountain, climbing the next peak. That was one mountain, and now it's time to start another one. We've also said that championships are won on Sunday. How are you going to approach this game?"
How It Happened: The Ducks controlled play for most of the afternoon, and did so on the scoreboard nearly from the outset. In the 11th minute, Jazmin Jackmon took a pass from Friday night's game-winning goal scorer, Chardonnay Curran, up the left side, created some space for herself and then let loose a cross that Everett toed home to make it 1-0.
Bayley Bruner nearly finished a similar play just moments later, as the Ducks kept up the pressure. Around the 30-minute mark, the Vandals began surging, but Oregon emphatically regained momentum. In the 35th minute, Jackmon played the ball up into the box, where UO freshman Zoe Hasenauer and the Idaho keeper converged on it. The ball popped out to Everett, and she stuffed in the carom for a 2-0 lead.

"I'm absolutely pleased," Mertz said. "It's a Sunday game and for us to pounce on Idaho early, I was really happy about that. I would have liked to see one more to kind of seal the deal. But I'm really happy for Marissa Everett, but also the back line and the whole team to get a shutout."
The Ducks certainly had chances to tack on. In the 85th minute, Oregon was swarming the net and created a couple of scoring chances. Then, with 10 seconds left, Nicole Seaman had a point-blank shot saved, with Everett sending the rebound — and her chance at a hat trick — sailing over the goal. She settled for her fourth and fifth goals of the season.
"It feels great, but I know the season's not over yet," said Everett, who scored three goals on the weekend and tied Emma Eddy for the team lead with five. "So I've just got to continue to stay hungry and keep attacking. And keep pushing my teammates to also get some goals, get some assists. It's fun."
Who Stood Out: Everett peppered the Idaho net with five shots, and Jackmon, Bruner and Hasenauer had three apiece. Seaman came off the bench to put two shots on goal, including the glorious late chance.
"Nicole, I was just dying for her," Mertz said. "And Zoe Hasenauer; I know that she has a little bit of pressure on her shoulders. Any time we can try to get some of that pressure off of your back, I think yeah, absolutely (you want to see that)."

What It Means: The Ducks completed a strong slate of nonconference games against a tough lineup of opponents, a solid set of tests before conference play begins Friday.
"I'm happy," Mertz said. "We wanted to figure out our front three rotation and dynamic. I think our backs are coming on nicely. We've got Chai Cortez that is healthy again, so we're able to rotate our backs a little bit. Our midfield is really coming along. Chardonnay (got) a really great goal on Friday night. I thought Sofia (Chambers) had two really solid performances this weekend."
Notable: Oregon improved to 6-1-1 for the second time in the last three years under Mertz. … Everett moved into sole possession of sixth place in UO history with her 15th career goal, and third in game-winning goals with eight. She has 40 career points, also sixth in UO history. … Senior Halla Hinrinksdottir recorded her 21st career victory, tied for third in school history with Abby Steele (2011-14). … Eddy started and played 60 minutes against Idaho, where she began her career in 2016 before transferring to Oregon.
