Ducks Fall Short at No. 9 Washington State, 2-1
09/27/18 | Women's Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. — Oregon fell behind in a game for the fifth time this season, and for the fourth time in those contests, the Ducks tied the match. But Washington State's goal in the 70th minute proved to be the difference as the ninth-ranked Cougars edged Oregon 2-1 Thursday night at Lower Soccer Field.
How It Happened: WSU (9-0, 2-0) found a hole in the Oregon defense in the 48th minute as Elyse Bennett finished a deflected pass to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Oregon (7-2-1, 1-1-0) tied the game 1-1 in the 58th minute after Emma Eddy was taken down for a foul just outside the Cougars' box. Sofia Chambers took the free kick for the Ducks and her shot nicked a WSU player on the wall before finding its way into the goal.
But WSU responded with the game-winner in the 70th minute. Maddy Haro, the national leader in assists, lobbed a long pass up the middle to Maegan O'Neill, who nudged it past UO goalkeeper Halla Hinriksdottir from six yards out.
Both teams had chances in a back-and-forth first half. The Ducks attempted eight shots to the Cougars' nine.
Hinriksdottir made three first-half saves, including a point-blank stop of Morgan Weaver's strike in the 15th minute.
Who Stood Out: Hinriksdottir tied her career high with seven saves. Zoe Hasenauer led the Ducks' 14-shot attack with three.
What It Means: Oregon's five-match winning streak came to a close on Thursday, but the 7-2-1 start is still the program's best since 2009.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I'm proud of our team and our fight tonight against a very good WSU team on the road. I thought we dealt well with the threats that WSU presented and we were able to create a lot of quality chances. I'm looking forward to see how we respond on Sunday."
Notable: It was Chambers' first goal of the season and second of her career.
Up Next: Oregon will play at Washington on Sunday (2 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
