Cougars Inch Past Ducks
10/19/19 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – Washington State scored off a corner kick in the 67th minute to defeat Oregon 1-0 Saturday night at Pape' Field.
How It Happened: Oregon (4-5-5, 0-4-2 Pac-12) was inches away from the shutout. On the Cougars' goal, Duck defender Hannah Taylor appeared to clear Elyse Bennett's shot safely out of the net, but the linesman ruled that the ball crossed the goal line inches before Taylor kicked it away.
"I think I was in the goal but I'm curious to see if the ball was actually in the goal," said Taylor. "I thought we put in a solid performance, but at the end of the day we were down one, so that is frustrating."
Taylor made a similar play in the first half to keep the match scoreless, knocking a WSU shot off the line in the 30th minute.
A missed call late in the game cost the Ducks an opportunity for the tie. Ally Cook's 82nd minute shot from inside the penalty box deflected off the hand of a WSU defender out of bounds, but Oregon was not awarded a penalty kick.
Who Stood Out: Goalkeeper Katelyn Carter made three saves, all in the first half.
What It Means: Oregon's defense was solid all night. The Ducks yielded just the one goal despite being outshot by the Cougars (10-3-1, 3-2-1) 19-5.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"It was a week for us where we really wanted to focus on what we could control on the field and focus on defending. They are a really good team. I thought we came out really strong, but in the second half we needed to find ways to be a little more dangerous, we were on our heels a little bit."
Kat Mertz on Hannah Taylor
"Hannah Taylor is a trooper. She is showing you why she has been in camp with the full Canadian National team. She is showing you why she has played in the U-20 World Cup and U-17 World Cup. It's unfortunate that she was out all last season. We knew we were going to have her back for Pac-12's and I'm happy to see the back six."
Notable: Cook led the Ducks with three shot attempts … Saturday night was Oregon's Cancer Awareness Game.
Up Next: Oregon plays at Arizona on Thursday at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks).
