Wormdahl Scores Twice in 2-2 Tie
08/22/19 | Women's Soccer
FRESNO, Calif. – Jordan Wormdahl scored twice in the first half as Oregon opened the 2019 season with a 2-2 tie against Fresno State Thursday night at the FSU Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
How It Happened: Wormdahl struck from distance on the right side in the 26th minute to give Oregon a 1-0 lead. It was the first career goal for the Eugene, Ore., native and North Eugene High School alumnus.
Less than three minutes later, Fresno State knotted the game at 1-1 on a free kick. Kayla King sent the ball deep to the right side, where Robyn McCarthy headed a soaring ball over UO goalie Katelyn Carter into the net with no room on the endline to spare.
The Ducks scored their own set-piece goal in the 42nd minute when Zoe Hasenauer took a corner kick from Mia Palmer and redirected it to Wormdahl, who headed the ball into the net past the diving Fresno State keeper.
With the Ducks holding on to a one goal lead late in the game, the Ducks surrendered an own goal on a deflected cross in the 88th minute that tied the game at 2-2. Neither team found the net in the extra frames.
Who Stood Out: Wormdahl, who was a prolific scorer in high school for North Eugene (67 career goals), scored her first two goals as a Duck. Hasenauer, who led the Ducks in assists in 2018, recorded her first two helpers of the 2019 season.
What It Means: Oregon opens the 2019 season with a road tie against a senior-laden Fresno State squad that returned its top three scorers from a year ago.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"Really unlucky to give up that own goal late but also really good to go out on the road and earn a draw with a veteran club like Fresno State. It's disappointing to be so close and not finish the game the way we wanted to, but these things will also help better prepare us down the road.
Notable: Five players made their first collegiate starts against Fresno: junior True Dydasco, sophomore Chai Cortez and freshmen Ally Cook, Croix Soto and Sakura Yoshida. Six freshmen made their Oregon debuts: Cook, Soto, Yoshida, Claire Watkins and Maggie Lacey and Lilli Rask.
Up Next: Oregon travels to No. 13 Santa Clara Sunday 1 p.m. (TheW.tv).
