Noble & Scherer Pace Track Squads in Pepsi Team Invite
04/09/06 | Track and Field
EUGENE - In the 17th annual Pepsi Team Invitational, the University of Oregon and Washington narrowly won the women's and men's team titles in front of the second largest meet crowd (5,004) at Hayward Field Saturday afternoon.
The Oregon women won their 12th meet title by a four-point margin (203) over Penn State (second, 199), Washington (third, 152) and Boise State (fourth, 95).
The Men of Oregon weathered bad luck in several events to still finish second with 176 points - only two points behind Washington (first, 178) who won their first Pepsi men's team crown. Minnesota trailed close behind in third place (172 1/3), followed by Boise State (fourth, 84).
Individually, the Duck squads combined for 13 wins (7M, 6W), 18 regional qualifying marks (7M, 11W), two women's meet records and another women's school record.
Midway through the meet, the storied venue showcased a book unveiling by Olympian and former Duck Kenny Moore, who presented the first copy of "Bowerman and the Men of Oregon" to his widow Barbara and the Bowerman family. The Rodale-published book will be in stores nationwide later in April.
Freshman Rebekah Noble paced women's action with a meet record in the 800 meters (first, 2:03.11). The Spokane, Wash., native relied on her familiar sit-and kick method and rallied to the lead midway through the last lap to win by more than four seconds over first-lap leader Briene Simmons Penn State (second, 2:07.61). Sophomore All-American Amanda Miller of Washington followed in third place another two seconds back (third, 2:09.63).
“I've been dreaming about running an 800 here for the Ducks for a while, but it really didn't hit me how big a deal it was until I heard my name at the starting line,” Noble said. “To have all the people in the stands looking down on you, cheering you on is a once in a lifetime type of experience. I didn't know I was on pace to run that fast. I just ran my race strategy. With about 50 meters to go, I looked up at the scoreboard and realized then we could run 2:03 or so.”
Noble broke the meet record of 2:06.24 set by Nebraska's Lisa Graham in 1992, and made her debut on the UO outdoor all-time list at fourth behind Duck greats Claudette Groenendaal (first, 1:58.33), Leann Warren (second, 1:59.63, 1981) and Ranza Clark (third, 2:01.7, 1984).
The returning USA junior and Pan-Am junior champion Noble also improved upon her former personal best that won the 2005 USA Junior Outdoor Championships last June (2:03.73) - a mark that ranked her ninth all-time in U.S. prep history and was the fastest by an American high schooler since 1982.
Noble's season debut at the event also easily met the regional standard of 2:09.80.
Another first-year Duck, junior Dana Buchanan claimed a meet record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (first, 10:33.77). The University of Hawai'i transfer and Beachburg, Ont., native broke the former school record held by Carrie Zografos (10:42.02, 2002) in the event's first appearance in the Pepsi Team Invitational.
Redshirt senior teammate Amanda Fitz-Gustafson also met the regional standard in the same event (10:52.25), and improved on her former personal best (10:51.81) from her 2003 sophomore season when she competed for Arizona State.
Senior Lauryn Jordan also climbed the UO all-time charts in the long jump and triple jump. The returning Pac-10 scorer won both events Saturday with personal best marks of 20-1 (w:1.3) and 41-4 1/2 (w:0.2), respectively, to move to sixth and second all-time for the Ducks, and also met regional qualifying standards in both. The second-year Duck and team captain also led the team in the 100 meters (third, 11.7-hand-timed).
Fellow heptathlete and redshirt freshman Kalindra McFadden also enjoyed a busy day and had season bests in the 100-meter hurdles (third, 14.38W, w:4.4), high jump (fourth, 5-4 1/4) and long jump (fourth, 18-4 1/4, w:1.8).
On the throws runway, freshman javelin thrower Rachel Yurkovich notched her third straight win Saturday (163-10) and was one of three UO regional qualifiers in the event that included freshman Ashley McCrea (third, 146-9) and redshirt senior Roslyn Lundeen (fifth, season best 143-10).
The Ducks added a pair of regional qualifiers in the hammer and were led by redshirt junior Britney Henry (second, 200-11). Redshirt senior and NCAA veteran Brittany Hinchcliffe followed five inches behind in third place (200-6) and improved on her former personal best (200-3, 2004) as the duo remain first and second all-time in UO history based on personal bests. Freshman Megan Maloney joined the UO all-time hammer rankings at the 10 spot with her sixth-place mark and six-foot, one-inch season best Saturday (personal best 174-2).
Other top Duck women's performances Saturday came from graduate student Amber McGown (800 meters, sixth, personal best 2:11.54; 1,500 meters, second, 4:30.27), sophomores Sarah Pearson (3,000 meters, second, personal best 9:50.16), Amanda Santana (400 hurdles, second, season best 61.71) and Kasey Harwood (400 hurdles, third, 63.14), the 4x400-meter relay (second, regional qualifier 3:40.17) and freshman Lucy Cridland (discus, fourth, personal best 144-11).
Overall on the women's side, Penn State's outdoor collegiate season leader Shana Cox won the 400 meters by more than two seconds (53.50) and doubled back to win the 200 by more than a quarter-second (first, 24.27, w:-0.9). Nittany Lion teammate and senior Jennifer Leatherman scored an almost four-foot meet record in the hammer (first, 205-5) between her victories in the shot put (51-6 1/4) and discus (161-3). UW collected impressive wins from juniors Ashley Lodree (100, 11.3-hand-timed, w:1.4), Amy Lia (1,500 meters, 4:27.42) and senior Carly Dockendorf (pole vault, 12-5 1/2).
On the men's side, Oregon senior Matt Scherer made his outdoor season debut in the 400 meters (first, 46.06) and was only .36 seconds off his personal best from 2005 (45.70) that ranks him fourth all-time for UO. The Sumner, Ill, native also won the 200 metes later in the day in a .15-second outdoor personal best (21.37, w:-1.9), and helped UO to a season best at meet's end on the 4x400-meter relay (second, 3:11.31).
Seniors Eric Mitchum and Akobundu Ikwuakor repeated their Pepsi Team Invite finishes from last season in the 110-meter hurdles, and took first (13.68W, w:4.1) and second (14.07W, w:4.1) as the latter made his season event debut.
Ikwuakor claimed a personal best nearly 20 minutes later in his 400 meters season debut (fifth, 48.60), and late ranked second on the team in the 200 meters (fourth, 22.14, w:-1.9). Mitchum returned to win the 400-meter hurdles with a regional qualifier (52.09) in his season debut and was only .82 seconds off his personal best (51.27) from 2004 that ranks him 10th all-time for UO.
Both Mitchum and Ikwuakor ran on UO's 4x400-meter relay (second, 3:11.31).
Redshirt freshman Christopher Winter won his first race in an Oregon track uniform in the steeplechase (9:00.95) and ran a 3.79-second season best and regional qualifier, and pulled within six seconds of his personal best (8:54.94).
Redshirt junior Colin Veldman led the ?Men of Oregon' in three throws events - the shot put (third, 52-6 1/2), discus (third, 177-8) and hammer (fifth, 183-1) and had regional qualifiers in the latter two events.
Other top men's marks came from freshman Andrew Perri (800 meters, seventh, season best 1:54.41), redshirt sophomores Michael McGrath (800 meters, fourth, 1:53.56; 1,500 meters, second, 3:52.92) and Carlos Trujillo (5,000 meters, third, 14:29.88), freshman Jared Huske (100 meters, second, 10.86, w:1.6; 400-meter hurdles, third, season best 53.59), the 4x100-meter relay (first, regional qualifier/season best 40.33), reshirt senior Jonathan Derby (pole vault, first, regional qualifier 16-6 3/4), freshman Alexey Shkuratov (high jump, eighth, 6-3 1/2; long jump, fourth, 22-0 1/4, w:1.5), redshirt freshman Mark Lewis (shot put, fifth, 52-1) and junior Ryan Brandel (javelin, third, 198-11).
