Ducks Drop Match to No. 2 Stanford
10/13/19 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 2 Stanford took advantage of a penalty kick in the 41st minute and went on to defeat Oregon 5-0 Sunday at Pape' Field.
How It Happened: The Duck defense stifled Stanford (12-1, 5-0 Pac-12) for the first 41 minutes, blocking six of the Cardinal's first eight shot attempts. But then Abby Greubel's shot struck an Oregon defender's hand inside the box, and national player of the year candidate Caterina Macario scored on the penalty kick. She later added her second goal of the match in the 53rd minute.
"You've been working your tails off for 41 minutes and unfortunately get that penalty," said Oregon head coach Kat Mertz. "I thought our players did well, they fought hard, and I think they were just a little heavy legged."
Who Stood Out: Zoe Hasenauer had four of Oregon's six shots.
What It Means: Oregon (4-4-5, 0-3-2) lost for the first time at Pape' Field this season.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I told our kids to have a short-term memory. They have to let it go. We've got Washington State and the Arizona schools on the road. We've got a lot of soccer left and I think that is the important thing to remember."
Notable: Sophomore goalkeeper Charlotte Brisley came on in relief in the 79th minute and made her first career save on the only shot she faced … The Cardinal's 28 shots were the most the Ducks have faced this season … Oregon was shutout for just the second time this year … This weekend's crowds, 968 Thursday for California and 757 on Sunday, were the two biggest crowds of the year.
Up Next: Oregon hosts No. 15 Washington State Saturday at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Live Stream).
