2002-03: Competed in four races outdoors (3,000-3; 1,500-1). Bettered preseason 3K best (8:33.83) in two races - Pepsi Team Invite (12th, personal best 8:32.92) and Oregon Twilight (seventh, 8:33.22). Raced 5,000 once in Oregon Invitational (14th, 15:09.74). In cross country was one of team's top two newcomers, and ran three meets. Finished seventh on squad in Pac-10 Championships (46th, 25:23) and Roy Griak Invite (128th, 25:56), and also ran in NCAA Western Regional open race (42nd, 6K 20:07). Ran first race as Duck and ranked second on ?B' unit in Pier Park Preview (eighth, 25:15).
2001-02: Attended Oregon, but did not train with squad and and trained locally with a group of post-collegians coached by Matt Lonergan, the same coach and husband of 2000 women's 1,500 Olympian Marla Runyan. Competed unattached locally at several area meets, including the Oregon Twilight (3,000, sixth, 8:33.83) and Oregon Invitational (5,000, fifth, 15:03.67) at Eugene's Hayward Field, and in the Willamette Invitational in Salem (800, 25th, 2:01.62; 1,500, eighth, 3:59.99). Lowered his personal best in the 1,500 (3:56.52) in another meet at Willamette University.
Prep: Lettered three seasons in cross country and track and won team's most improved award. Coached by Mark Stripe, and attended Yorktown High School. In 2000-2001, attended Lawrenceville Prep Academy, and ran cross country and track under coaches Edward Poreda (xc) and Jon Shilts (track).
