Ducks Extend Unbeaten Streak to Five Matches
09/13/19 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – Eden Hardy scored her first collegiate goal to help Oregon earn a 2-2 draw with Portland Friday night at Pape' Field.
The tie against the Pilots (2-1-2) extended Oregon's unbeaten streak to five matches.
The Ducks (3-1-3) also continued their torrid scoring pace, adding two more goals to the season total for 17 so far in 2019.
How It Happened: Oregon struck twice in the first half. In the 17th minute, Sakura Yoshida chipped a ball to Ally Cook at the right side of the box. Cook then poked it past Portland goalie Jenny Wahlen to the far post. It was the third goal of the season for the freshman from Coto de Caza, Calif.
"It's definitely a lot of the right place at the right time," said Cook. "We have worked a lot on getting crosses off, and finding the back post, and that's kind of what happened today."
After Portland tied the match on a goal by Kimberly Hazlett in the 26th minute, Hardy collected Alyssa Hinojosa's free kick deep in the penalty box, wheeled around to her left and fired a shot past Wahlen to the near post.
The Pilots' Emily Collier tied the match with a goal off a free kick in the 71st minute.
Each team attempted three shots in overtime, but did not score. For the game, the Ducks outshot Portland 14-8.
Who Stood Out: After scoring three times during the spring of 2019, and once in Oregon's exhibition match this fall against British Columbia, Hardy, a junior from Arcadia, Calif., finally broke through with her first official goal as a Duck.
What It Means: Oregon's 17 goals through seven games match the modern era record of 17 set by the 2001 squad.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"We need to get healthy and we need to use this time to get players who are banged up fresh."
Notable: Yoshida tied Zoe Hasenauer for the team lead in assists with her fourth of the season … Hinojosa's assist was her first of the season and second of her career … Hardy is the seventh different Duck to score a goal this season, which already surpasses last season's total of six different goal scorers … This was Oregon's third overtime game in seven matches this season (0-0-3).
Up Next: Oregon hosts Buffalo on Sept. 22 in the final non-conference game of 2019 (5 p.m., Pac-12 Live Stream).
