Ducks Give Mertz 100th Career Win with Golden Goal
09/22/19 | Women's Soccer
EUGENE, Ore. – Emma Eddy found herself alone one-on-one with Buffalo's goalkeeper, Emily Kelly, in the 43rd minute of Sunday night's match at Pape' Field. With the potential game-tying goal at her feet, Eddy's shot was smothered by a charging Kelly, and the Ducks went into halftime down 1-0.
However when Eddy found herself in the same situation in overtime, the senior from Eugene, Ore., lifted a shot over a charging Kelly and into the back of the net for the game-winning golden goal and a 2-1 victory over the visiting Bulls.
"It felt really good, especially since I missed the first one in the first half," said Eddy of her first goal of the season. "I felt really bad about that, so it felt good to get that in.
"I was just thinking that I had to get that one in, since I missed the last one. This has to be it."
The win also gave Oregon head coach Kat Mertz her 100th career coaching victory.
How It Happened: The Ducks (4-1-3) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with a second half goal by Zoe Hasenauer.
In the first half, Buffalo (3-3-1) took advantage of an Oregon foul in the penalty box. The Bulls' Marcy Barberic scored the penalty kick to the right corner of the net in the 29th minute.
Oregon outshot the Bulls 13-2 in the second half as Hasenauer swung the momentum back to Oregon's side by heading in a Sakura Yoshida corner kick in the 63rd minute to knot the game at 1-1.
The Ducks continued to press in overtime, outshooting the Bulls 6-0.
After the Ducks forced a turnover at midfield, Lilli Rask dribbled the ball up the right side and centered it to Emma Eddy, who split two defenders before beating Kelly in the 98th minute.
Who Stood Out: Hasenauer put six of her eight shot attempts on goal, while all four of Eddy's shots were on net.
What It Means: After three ties, Oregon won in overtime for the first time this season.
Quotable:
Head coach Kat Mertz
"I'm so happy that we won in overtime. The girls were screaming that. They were like, 'Hey! We got a win in overtime!' So, you know, you always like to see upward trends. And you know I go back to scoring one more goal than the opponent, upward trends. And you know, trying to figure out that we can move positively going into the Pac-12."
Sophomore midfielder Zoe Hasenauer on Kat Mertz's 100th career win
"That's just awesome, I am really happy for Kat. She deserves it a lot, and I am happy that our team could deliver that for her today."
Notable: Yoshida took over the team lead with her fifth assist of the season … Rask recorded her first career assist … This was Oregon's fourth overtime game in eight matches so far in 2019 … Oregon is unbeaten in its last six matches.
Up Next: Oregon opens Pac-12 play Friday at Washington (7 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
