The All-America transfer looks forward to his first track season for the Ducks in 2008 (and final as a collegian) and could run any race from 800-5,000 meters, while balancing his busy schedule as a second-year journalism graduate student. Connects Oregon's distance running success to a generation before when his father Rudy Chapa was a beloved Duck track and cross country All-American and an NCAA 5,000m champion at Hayward Field in 1978. Joaquin enrolled at Oregon spring term in 2007 and competed unattached and recorded strong marks in the 1,500m / mile and a personal best in the 5,000m. Previously competed for Stanford University as an undergraduate student-athlete and graduated in winter of 2007. Earned two All-America honors indoors for the Cardinal in the distance medley relay in the 2005 and '06 NCAA Indoor Championships. Also a former Pac-10 track scorer and two-time finalist in 800m. As a prep, was a six-time Oregon 4A state track placer, including the state 1,500m champion as a senior in 2003, and a three-time state cross country competitor.
Fall 2007: Wrapped up collegiate cross country career for West Regional team champions (47th overall, 31:22). Scored for team in two early season contests, the Sunriver Open (sixth overall, 19:26) and Mike Hodges Invitational (third overall, 19:36), and also raced the Dellinger Invitational.
2006-07: Joined Duck program spring term and began journalism graduate school. Did not compete for UO outdoors, and ran four outdoor races unattached. Indoors for Stanford, ran mile season best of 4:04.75 in Husky Classic in Seattle. Personal / Season Bests: Outdoors - 1,500m - 3:45.63, Road to Eugene, Eugene (5/26/08); Mile - 4:05.36, Oregon Twilight, Eugene (5/5/07); 5,000m - 14:07.41 (PR), Oregon Invitational, Eugene (4/20/07); Indoors (at Stanford) - Mile - 4:04.75, Husky Classic, Seattle (2/10/07).
Before Oregon: All-American (Distance Medley Relay). Earned All-America honors in the distance medley relay in the NCAA Indoor Championships as a sophomore in 2005 (fourth, 9:35.55) and junior in 2006 (eighth, 9:41.91). His squad entered those meets ranked fourth and sixth before the meet, respectively, on the national season best list with marks of 9:33.49 and 9:34.32. Outdoors, competed in Pac-10 Track and Field Championships as a sophomore in 2005 (800m, ninth, 1:49.98) and freshman in 2004 (800m, seventh, 1:50.48). Ranked top 20 nationally in 1,500m as a collegian during regular season in 2005 (19th, 3:43.22). Outdoor collegiate season bests follow ? 2006 (800m 1:53.79; 1,500m 3:54.43), 2005 (800m, 1:49.98; 1,500m, 3:43.22) and 2004 (800m 1:49.83). Saw limited action in cross country and redshirted his first fall season (2004). Academic All-American. Three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection in track and field (Second Team: 2005, 2006) and cross country (Honorable Mention: 2004).
Prep: Won Oregon 4A state 1,500m title as senior in 2003 (3:51.39) and took second in 800m (1:51.27) behind Duck teammate Michael McGrath, and also placed in 4x400m as anchor (fourth, 3:22.95). On state season best list as senior, ranked second in 800m (1:50.47 - runner-up finish in Golden West Invitational) and also in 1,500m (3:51.39a) with winning state meet clocking - those marks also stood seventh and fourth nationally, respectively. Added top-four state track finishes as a junior (1,500m, fourth, 3:54.89; 4x400m, second, 3:21.11), sophomore (800m, fourth, 1:54.42) and freshman (4x400m, third, 3:21.53). Personal bests came as a senior in 800m and 1,500m and were 1:50.47 and 3:51.39, and his junior season bests were 1:52.70 and 3:54.89. In cross country, placed fifth as senior in 4A state cross country championships, and also ran as a junior (ninth) and sophomore (43rd), and scored for his team that finished top 15 in 2002 (second), ’01 (sixth), ’00 (13th). Also competed in Border Clash as a senior (sixth) and junior (47th). Four-year letterwinner in track and cross country. National Merit Scholarship finalist.
Personal: Father Rudy Chapa was an American 3,000m record holder (7:37.7) and seven-time Duck All-American (XC 4, Track 3), and three-time top-15 NCAA harrier finisher (only the third Duck to accomplish the feat with his teammate Alberto Salazar and Steve Prefontaine). His mother Trish Eiting was an accomplished Indiana University sprinter and jumper. Graduate school major: Journalism.
